About Andrew
Andrew Howard is a freelance photographer who is based in Southport on the North West coast of England. Andrew mainly specializes in fine art floral, landscape and architectural photography.
Andrew first discovered the beauty of photography when he was just 4 years old when he got his first camera, a simple plastic Diana F camera fitted with a plastic lens. One may notice that many of Andrew's flower photographs are quite soft and dreamy and Andrew puts this down to his first experiences of using this camera.
Andrew then moved on to his father's totally manual Agfa viewfinder camera and by using this camera he learnt how to truly control a camera. Although Andrew has embraced digital photography he still has a love of film and has a varied collection of old film cameras all of which to this day he still likes to use.
Andrew developed his first film when he was 15 years old and he still develops his own film today, be it black and white, colour, 35mm or 120 roll film and many of the photographs on his website were actually taken on film.
Andrew employs a large variety of lenses for his work the choice of lens can vary from professional tilt and shift lenses all the way to basic modified plastic lenses and filters, it all depends on the look that he wishes to achieve for the final image. Unless he is producing abstract photographic art Andrew aims to capture the true beauty of his subjects through the use and control of light and composition and not by excessive digital manipulation. Andrew likes to capture the image as true as possible in-camera and only normally uses post-processing skills to enhance what is already present in the image.
This is what Andrew believes is the difference between a photographer and a digital artist. In late 2015 Andrew completed a BA Honours Degree in photography at The University of Bolton; this was after six years part-time study balancing work and family commitments. In his final end of year show at the university the governing body purchased all of Andrew's exhibition work. This work consisted of six large printed and framed fine art still life flower photographs and they are now permanently on view in the university's walkthrough gallery.
